ECU Young Artist Piano Competition & Masterclasses will be POSTPONED. The new date will be announced at a later time.

 

The East Carolina University Young Artist Piano Competition & Masterclasses are designed to inspire young musicians in our region to strive for the highest level of musicianship and technical accomplishment in piano performance.

The piano competition is open to students aged 11-18 from the District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Masterclasses are open to all pre-college and college students (ages 11-26). It is possible to participate in masterclasses without entering the competition.

Schedule:

9am-1:30pm Junior & Senior Division Competitions
1:30-2:30pm Luncheon
2:30-4:30pm Masterclasses (30 minutes per participant)
5:00pm Announcement of winners
6:00pm Winners’ Recital


Eligibility:

Young Artist Piano Competition

  • The East Carolina University Young Artist Piano Competition is open to all pre-college students between the ages of 11 and 14 (Junior), and 15 and 18 (Senior), who are residents of the District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia and who have studied with a teacher residing in that area for at least six months prior to the date of the competition. The Division each contestant should enter is determined by his/her age on the date of the competition, in this case, May 2, 2020.
  • Students who meet the age requirements but are enrolled in a college degree program are ineligible.

Masterclass

  • The masterclass is open to both competing and non-competing students between the ages of 11 and 26.

Competition Rules:

  1. Current or past students of the judges in their division are not allowed to enter the competition.
  2. Contestants and their parents and teachers may not make contact with the judges until after the competition.
  3. Contestants will be assigned a number at registration and will not be referred to by name until after the competition.
  4. Former first place winners may not enter in the same division.
  5. Performances during the competition may be recorded and a composite CD added to the collection in the Music Library. By submitting the application form the contestant agrees that the director of the competition may use these recordings in future media broadcasts or in advertising for the competition without compensation to the contestant.
  6. The Young Artist Piano Competition reserves the right not to award certain prizes if no performance warrants it.
  7. All participants are required to be present for the luncheon (1:30-2:30pm), announcement of the winners (5pm), and Winner’s Recital (6pm).
