NC NewMusic Initiative kicks off its 23rd season with a Guest Artist Residency by “ultra-soprano” Emily Thorner, who is rapidly making her mark as a soloist in contemporary music ensembles, orchestras, and modern opera. Known for her command of stratospheric high notes, Ms. Thorner is highly sought-after for world premieres due to her unusual range and fearless virtuosity.
On Thursday, November 10, Ms. Thorner will present her latest project, STATE OF BEING: a touring concert experience for one vocalist (and electronics) featuring commissions specifically for her unique voice by a multi-national lineup of contemporary/living composers.
In addition to the concert, Ms. Thorner will engage with our music students through as series of master classes, career seminars, and a composition reading session/ workshop featuring music by ECU student composers, written specifically for this occasion.

NC NewMusic Initiative is proud to once again welcome the Meridian Arts Ensemble to Greenville! Since 1987, MAE has been one of America’s leading brass groups exploring the music of today, with nine commercial CD releases, over fifty world premieres by many of the greatest composers of our time, and performances on four continents and 49 states! Consistently attracting a diverse audience base, this ensemble has worked tirelessly to keep the traditions of classical music alive, to spread the appeal of these traditions, and to revisit these traditions from a contemporary sensibility.
In addition to this concert, the members of Meridian will engage with our music students through a series of master classes, career seminars, and a composition reading session/ workshop featuring music by ECU student composers written specifically for the ensemble.

We are pleased to welcome Transient Canvas back to Greenville! For over a decade, this Boston-based bass clarinet + marimba duo (Amy Advocat & Matt Sharrock) has been thrilling audiences with their “engaging musicality and easy sense of ensemble” (Cleveland Classical). With a commissioned repertoire of over 90 works and three albums released on New Focus Records, Transient Canvas is a powerhouse in contemporary music, championing the music of established and emerging composers alike.
In addition to this concert, Matt & Amy will engage with our music students through a series of master classes, career seminars, and a composition reading session/ workshop featuring music by ECU student composers written specifically for the ensemble.

For our final Guest Artist Residency of the year, we are excited to welcome andPlay! This New York City-based duo of Maya Bennardo, violin, and Hannah Levinson, viola, first played to an eager crowd on Fire Island in the summer of 2012 and has since commissioned over forty works. They are committed to expanding the existing violin/viola duo repertoire by commissioning new works and actively collaborating with living artists.
In addition to this concert, Maya & Hannah will engage with our music students through a series of master classes, career seminars, and a composition reading session/ workshop featuring music by ECU student composers written specifically for the ensemble.
