What if we all play a role in creating new music?
We think it’s not a radical idea.
- What if musicians learn, from their earliest days making music, that you needn’t be a composer to be a part of creating a new piece of music?
- What if we teach musicians that the partnerships which bring about new works–identifying composers, collaborating as new ideas are formulated, performing and recording–would be richer with their involvement?
Watch this brief video for a quick outline of how we’re implementing a new model at the ECU School of Music’s NC NewMusic Initiative.
[or watch this one from 2017!]
Here at the NewMusic Initiative, we imagine the commissioning process playing out over three years, with students at the heart of each stage of the process:
Using a recent commission of students’ selected composer James Mobberley as an example,
here’s what a single commission’s cycle looks like:
And here’s where we are in the ongoing cycle, thanks to lots of participating students and supportive sponsors!
Here are a few recently completed projects of ECU forces recording NewMusic Initiative Commissions
- Asha Srinivasan, Ipseity (audio forthcoming)
- Lei Liang’s Close Your Eyes
- Melinda Wagner’s Tell It Slant (or performance video)
- Matthew Ricketts’ Méloscuro
- Jim Mobberley’s Capricious Paradise
- Travis Alford’s Loose Strands
- Aaron Brooks’ Divergent Melodies
