Ph.D. (Music Theory), M.F.A. (Trumpet Performance), University of Iowa; M.M. (Composition), Southern Illinois University; B.A. in music, Kalamazoo College. Teachers include W.T. Atcherson and Richard Hervig, theory and composition, and David Greenhoe, trumpet. Research interests include the history of music theory, post-tonal theory and analysis, as well as baroque performance practice. Has presented and published work in each of these areas and has most recently combined his scholarly pursuits with historic trumpet performance in papers and concerts given at national meetings of the Historic Brass Society at Indiana University and the American Bach Society at Yale. An experienced orchestral player and former Principal Trumpet of the Midland and Newfoundland Symphonies, is currently active as a member of the ECU Brass Quintet and as a baroque trumpeter in several period instrument ensembles including the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra.
