Ph.D., MA, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; BM, Eastman School of Music. Specialization in music and politics during the Cold War period; secondary specializations in music technologies, popular musics, and atonal and serial music theory. Currently working on a book manuscript titled Composing Freedom: Elliott Carter as Cold War Entrepreneur. Experience as a performer and teacher of double bass and Javanese gamelan and various other western instruments. Publications in Tempo, The Journal of Popular Music Studies and the Mitteilungen der Paul Sacher Stiftung. Awards and residencies at the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel, Switzerland, The Szechuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu, China, and the Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna, Austria. Presentations at conferences of the American Musicological Society, Society for American Music, United States chapter of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and numerous regional conferences.
