MM in Theory-Composition, concentration in COMPOSITION:

All applicants for graduate study in the School of Music will take a diagnostic examination to determine preparation for graduate study.  For more information about this diagnostic exam

Applicants for the MM in Theory-Composition (Composition concentration) should submit the following materials in support of their application for the graduate program:

  • Personal statement: Typed 1-2 page essay containing a brief discussion of your
  • background and musical training as well as a statement of your professional goals;
  • Portfolio of Compositions : Three pieces (score and recording, if available);
  • An analytical paper which demonstrates skills in musical analysis and language/writing skills.

Candidates for the MM in Theory-Composition (Composition concentration) must:

  1. Submit an analytical thesis of substantial proportions, written with faculty approval, and under faculty supervision;
  2. Present a full concert recital (45 minutes of music, minimum) of pieces composed while in residence at East Carolina University;
  3. Satisfy the following Minimum degree requirement as indicated in the Graduate Catalog
